Suggested by Erica, to raise awareness around the disturbing rise in anti-Asian hate and violence. ”Anti-Asian racism isn’t new; however, according to NYPD data, hate crimes motivated by anti-Asian sentiment increased by 1,900% in the last year, fueled by speculation blaming the Asian community for COVID-19 (more here). A study found that 1 in 4 young Asian-Americans has experienced hate throughout the pandemic. Congress recently voted in favor of H.Res.908 which condemns all forms of anti-Asian sentiments as related to COVID-19; however, 40% of the votes went against pushing this resolution forward, meaning the core of the issue has yet to be tackled. It goes without saying that Asian-Americans need to be heard and supported, especially considering that the struggles of this community have been often overlooked due to the model minority myth.”
